There is something uniquely peaceful and fun about guided night runs. Whether it’s that feeling of running into the unknown or our instinctual apprehension about the dark. Night runs, even in familiar territory, are just good craic!
On Friday, runners will gear up and leave the Riverside Hotel an hour after sunset. Meandering up along the river and passing through local parkland. From here the group will cut across towards Cairns Woods, leaving the relative hustle bustle of the town behind them. Guided by torchlight, the group will begin with a steep ascent into the woodland which is characterized by challenging hills and native Irish trees. The route makes its way towards an ancient Cairn which sits atop the hill and has a 360 degree view of County Sligo. Surrounded by darkness, nature and the stars above there will be some refreshments and a brief talk from a local history buff.
On Saturday runners will be transported by bus out of town to the local wilderness of Union Woods. An expansive woodland with countless trails, Union Woods is home to a variety of wildlife ranging from tiny shrew to large deer. The group will be led by local guides through a series of entwined trails. As expected on trails runs the surface is variable and trail shoes are advised!
A viewing point exists atop a large rocky outcrop known as Union Rock. Here, runners will settle into some food and hot chocolate while a local astronomy guide gives a talk on the stars above ( cloud cover permitting ) . Once everyone has had their fill, the run home begins!
