Sligo’s first Trail Festival is coming next month

The Sligo Trail Running Festival is the brainchild of William Britton and the crew over at North-West Adventure Tours, and proudly sponsored by us at RunPod. It’s a truly local effort, inspired by a love of mad trail running and we’re excited to be a part of it!

The festival will kick off on Friday, 28 September and promises to be a fun, social and downright epic weekend, packed with activity. Have a look at the preliminary schedule here.

For trail running, Sligo offers an experience unlike any other. It’s tucked into a more or less overlooked corner of Ireland in the northwest, and people who come here for the first time are stunned by its majestic beauty, shaped by millions years of ice ages and erosion. Even those of us who have lived here for years are still in awe of the place!

Trail running in Sligo offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with that natural beauty, finding new perspectives and panoramic views.

Festival-goers will tackle the imposing Benbulben mountain on the Saturday, pictured below. It’s a tough 400m climb on soft ground, followed by a deceptively long run across Benbulben’s tabletop peak. The endpoint is always worth it, though, with 300-degree views of Sligo’s valleys and coastline, and the mountains of Donegal to the north.

On Sunday, the festival will take runners over and around Knocknarea (below). It’s a varied and scenic route which offers forestry, mountain-running and beaches. We’ll finish at the Strandhill People’s Market to refuel, chat and relax! The market offers delicious hot food and coffee, local products and an absolutely buzzing atmosphere for the perfect end to a great weekend.

Trail Fest 2

The Sligo Trail Running Festival promises to be a great weekend full of running, socialising and exploring the natural beauty of Sligo. Each run will also have an additional perk like yoga, astronomy guides, food or even a race-style timed option. You can choose to partake in one event, a few, or all of them! There are even weekend-stay packages for those travelling from afar.

It’s going to be an exciting weekend – something different, especially for the area, and we hope you’ll come along with us and enjoy!
